Overview
The Thimphu Tshechu is Bhutan’s most vibrant and culturally significant festival, held annually at Tashichho Dzong in the capital, Thimphu, typically in late September or early October. In 2025, it is scheduled from October 2 to 4. This three-day celebration honors Guru Rinpoche, the saint who brought Tantric Buddhism to Bhutan, and features
masked dances (Cham) performed by monks and laymen, each depicting religious stories and moral lessons. A highlight of the festival is the ceremonial unfurling of the Thongdrol, a giant sacred thangka of Guru Rinpoche, believed to bring blessings to all who view it. The event also showcases traditional Bhutanese attire, folk music, and the playful antics of Atsaras (Bhutanese clowns), creating a lively atmosphere that blends devotion, culture, and entertainment.
