Nepal Tourist Visa Information

Learn about the essential permits and visa requirements for visiting Nepal, including how to obtain them.
All foreign travelers must have a valid Nepalese visa to enter the country. Visas can be obtained on arrival at major entry points or in advance through a Nepali embassy or consulate abroad. Certain nationalities are required to get a visa before arrival.
Nepal allows independent travel for most tourists, but specific trekking regions or restricted areas may require special permits, which can be arranged through a registered travel agency.

Visa on Arrival:
Tourists can obtain a visa on arrival at entry points in Nepal. The process is quick and easy, but during peak seasons there may be queues. To avoid waiting, you may apply for a visa at a Nepali embassy/consulate abroad.

Visa Duration & Fees (On Arrival):

  • 15 Days – USD 30

  • 30 Days – USD 50

  • 90 Days – USD 125

Required Steps for Visa on Arrival:

  1. Arrival Card & Online Form: Fill out the arrival card and online visa form. Print the receipt with a barcode.

  2. Payment: Pay the visa fee (cash recommended). Receive a payment receipt.

  3. Immigration Counter: Submit your passport, form, and receipt for visa processing.

Visa Extension:

  • Tourist visa extensions cost USD 45 for a minimum of 15 days; additional days USD 3/day.

  • Late penalty: USD 5/day if delayed beyond the visa period.

Gratis / Free Visa:

  • Children under 10 (excluding U.S. citizens)

  • SAARC nationals (first visit, max 30 days)

  • Non-Resident Nepali (NRN) cardholders

  • Chinese nationals (up to 150 days)

  • Certain countries under mutual agreements (Thailand, Russia, Brazil, Myanmar, Vietnam, Cambodia, Mongolia, Jordan, Israel, Georgia, Qatar) – exemptions vary by country.

Important Notes:

  • Visa issued on arrival is a tourist visa, regardless of the purpose of visit.

  • If visiting Nepal for purposes other than tourism (e.g., trekking, business, family visit), you may need to change the visa category after arrival.

  • Citizens of certain countries (e.g., Nigeria, Ghana, Iraq, Afghanistan, Somalia, etc.) must apply at a Nepali embassy/consulate before arrival.

  • All visas are counted from the day you enter Nepal. If obtained at a diplomatic mission, entry must occur within six months of issuance.

Extension & Change of Visa:
Tourist visa extensions can be done at the Immigration Office in Kathmandu or Pokhara. Extensions of non-tourist visas can also be applied for at Immigration Offices (eligible only), up to one year.
