Tibet

Overview

The Potala Palace, often referred to as the Forbidden City of Lhasa, stands as an enduring symbol of Tibetan culture and spirituality. Perched dramatically atop Marpo Ri hill, this fortress-like complex was first built in the 7th century and later expanded by successive Dalai Lamas. It served both as the winter residence of the Dalai Lamas and as the administrative and spiritual heart of Tibet. The palace’s grandeur is reflected in its sacred chapels, mesmerising murals, and intricate artwork, each echoing centuries of devotion and craftsmanship. As a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the Potala Palace offers a profound insight into Tibet's rich heritage, Buddhist traditions, and architectural brilliance, making it a revered cultural treasure.

Day to Day Itinerary

Upon arrival at Lhasa’s high-altitude airport, you’ll be warmly welcomed by your English-speaking Tibetan guide and driver, who will accompany you to your hotel. Nestled at 3,650 meters above sea level, Lhasa is one of the highest and most spiritually significant cities in the world, offering a captivating blend of natural beauty and deep-rooted culture.

Due to the altitude, we place a strong emphasis on proper acclimatization. You’ll be encouraged to take it easy, stay well-hydrated, and get plenty of rest to help your body adjust to the thinner air.

Tonight, settle into your hotel in Lhasa and begin soaking in the peaceful energy of the Himalayas. Rest well—your once-in-a-lifetime Tibetan adventure is just beginning.

Your second day begins with a visit to the iconic Potala Palace, an architectural masterpiece built in the 17th century by the Fifth Dalai Lama. Perched high above the city, the palace offers breathtaking panoramic views and houses the private chambers of the Dalai Lama, alongside grand state rooms and numerous chapels rich with history and artistry.

Next, explore the revered Jokhang Temple, founded in the 7th century by King Songtsen Gampo. As Tibet’s most sacred temple and the spiritual heart of Lhasa, it invites you to immerse yourself in centuries of rich cultural and religious traditions.

Afterwards, take a stroll through the vibrant Barkhor Old Quarter, a lively market area filled with traditional shops and bustling with local life. Join the pilgrims on a kora, a sacred circumambulation around the Jokhang Temple. Walking clockwise, many devotees recite mantras and prayers, a Tibetan Buddhist practice believed to bring blessings and good fortune.

On the third day, your journey continues with visits to two of Tibet’s most significant monasteries: Drepung and Sera. After breakfast, you’ll head to the outskirts of Lhasa to explore Drepung Monastery, Tibet’s largest monastery, which once housed over 7,000 monks. Founded in the 15th century, Drepung is one of the three great centers of Tibetan Buddhist education within the Gelugpa School—also known as the Yellow Hat Sect—and served as the Dalai Lama’s residence before the construction of the Potala Palace.

In the afternoon, experience the vibrant intellectual life of Sera Monastery, famous for its lively monk debates. Witness monks engaging in spirited philosophical discussions, challenging each other’s understanding of Buddhist teachings. This captivating display offers a rare and inspiring insight into the depth and dynamism of Tibetan monastic tradition.
